Induction Junction, what’s your function?

No matter how many times you’ve done it, starting a new job is a stressful experience. You are surrounded by new faces working busily and purposefully, knowing exactly what they are doing and where they are going while you wander around trying to find a meeting happening in a conference room named OZ, struggle to remember dozens of new names (strangely none of which is Dorothy…), and find your way back to your desk from the bathroom. Also, they seem to speak in what sounds like English, but it’s mixed with some strange tribal language with words like gepo.

This can be stressful, and it’s easy to feel as if you might never “get it” – that you might never be a part of this energetic mosaic, or ever understand its unique language. And then, suddenly, the picture starts to come into focus. It might start with something as simple as someone explaining what a particular client means when they say “GEPO”  (good enough, proceed on!), or someone telling you about a great place to get lunch when you’re pressed for time, or even how to get to the less “relaxed” elevators. These are wonderful people! They help you find your way during what can be a stressful, albeit exhilarating time. And so, pixel by pixel, a picture of this place emerges.

LBi’s induction session was instrumental in finally pulling all those pixels together into a coherent picture of what the company is and does, a picture that I could start to see myself as contributing to and being an integral part of. Among the presenters was Andrea B, Director of Human Resources who introduced us to the culture of the company as well as guiding us through all we needed to know from a human resources perspective. Cedric Devitt, Executive Creative Director gave us a sense of the company’s goals and mission as well as helping us to understand the creative drive that powers it. Paddy O, Head of User Experience Design gave an in depth view of both the user experience department and the state of the art of user experience design in general. Judith Carr, Co President had many of us wanting to switch to client services to be a part of the exciting, demanding, and powerful world she described. Craig K, Senior Strategist made a complex subject both approachable and intriguing. Frank Pederson, COO, outlined the tremendous growth of our health division and the company’s growth overall. Lisa B, VP of Media, showed us some very cool and exciting projects and left us all feeling as if we had been a part of their creation. Chelsea P, Senior Project Manager exemplified the spirit of the delivery team by filling in at the last minute with grace and poise. Greg E – Head of Social Media/ePR showed us how we are all connected and made us feel a part of a greater whole, and Paolo Y, Director of Technology, guided us through a tour of the cutting edge technology being employed here at LBi.

In all, the induction session welcomed us as newcomers and in a very short time converted our longing to be a part of something exciting and prosperous into the sense that we now belong to something exciting and prosperous. That, I think is a successful induction.

Hot Lazy Summer Mobile Happenings…

RIM’s Blackberry platform; the once ruler of the Smartphone space; has invested considerable time and money in developing a new operating system for its phones. With this new “OS 6” it looks like BlackBerry is finally stepping up with a completive offering to the market.

About time I say!

It certainly appeared as if the Blackberry dominance was quickly waning; perhaps the circle is not complete and RIM’s platform will now have renewed life giving both Android and iPhone a run…

Let’s not have another Palm situation folks; the wider the set of viable options in the mobile arena the better it is for the end user.

On another yet related note it appears that Nokia Siemens Networks (a joint venture between Nokia of Finland and Siemens of Germany) is set to buy the wireless-network equipment division of Motorola. Wow, isn’t it surprising the level of Gravitas one can acquire for $1.2 billion in cash!

This acquisition will strengthen Nokia Siemens offering of equipment used to build and maintain cellular networks infrastructure including 4Gmobile tech like LTE (Long Term Evolution). LTE is one in a set of new standards in the mobile network technology tree subsuming previous players such as GSM/EDGE and UMTS/HSxPA network tech and even the infamous WiMax.

Based on these “happenings” my hope is that in the near future my mobile phone will be imbued with behavior more closely approximating the Quality Of Service (QOS) of its wired ancestors.

Darwin Would be Proud…..

“From little acorns do mighty oaks grow”[i] Gates and Ballmer to Microsoft, Steve and Steve to Apple (certainly Steve was more Apple than Steve[ii]), Page and Brin to Google and who could forget that college kid Zuckerberg to Facebook. This microsaur to megasaur story is truly starting to affect the daily life of today’s digital consumer.

Apple takes over the mobile space (1.7 million iPhone 4s sold the first weekend almost doubling the 3GS initial sales figures[iii]). Google is quickly starting to gain ground in the space with more powerful hardware running Android and Froyo the new 2.2.

Facebook is closing in on the 500 million user mark with number of users over 35 doubling in Q1 of ’09. It looks like Google could Bring It On[iv] to Facebook with “Googleme” a potential Social Networking “Killer App”.

Jobs says, Apple will not support Flash on its mobile devices. Adobe Says “SO!”….. The engineering world does what it does and comes up with several Flash to JavaScript cross compliers (Smokescreen[v] seemingly the most prominent) and the point becomes far less news worthy.

Meanwhile in his not so secret lair in Redwood City Ellison[vi] is quietly buying up all the last generation‘s great digital companies; while not being too busy to have a cameo in Iron Man 2[vii].

Strangely the folks from Redmond[viii] are running under the radar not being news worthy or rocking the world at all… Maybe a little Xbox stuff, Windows 7 is certainly humdrum, Zune: Ha! This quietness certainly falls into the category of “Things that make you go Hummmmm?”[ix]

If we were to compare the technological ages to that of geologic time; I would argue that given these facts and it’s very nascent state that we are experiencing the TechnoCretaceous[x] Period (TCP) having just emerged from the TechnoJurassic[xi] Period (TJP). The large roaming technosaurs are at their peak doing their evolutionary duty, mindlessly battling it out amongst each other hoping to be the sole survivor. What they cannot and are not able to contemplate is the “Texas” sized asteroid bearing down on them that will change digital’s future bringing in the TechnoPaleocene[xii] Epoch (TPE) and the rise of intelligence in the digital world.

Ahhhhhhh…. Darwin[xiii] would be proud.

Flash, Flex HTML5 and Beyond…

Adobe’s Flash and its cohorts Flex, AIR etc are and will remain the number one infrastructure for the RIA be it internet or mobile or …

Sure Microsoft dipped its toes into the space with its Silverlight offering which has met with limited but passionate success from the “Gates-O-Phile” community. Many of the examples and demo’s of Silverlight’s flavor of “Rich” that have crept into known space have shown a truly comprehensive look at the “KINDS-of-Things” one can achieve in the “Rich App” universe however; they have fallen somewhat flat: kinda-like OZZY singing lead in Don Giovanni. It’s an interesting experience but not one that is appropriate or expected.

Now with our friend Mr. Jobs purchasing and embedding an ad distribution network at Apple in concert with his drive to move to HTML5 as a single platform for the “Rich” space we have the potential of that well touted “immovable object and irresistible force” scenario.

Well… I say it’s about time!

Adobe has had years to evolve its platforms, which it has done; however without a true nemesis no one truly drives innovation. Where would IronMan be without Wiplash? Still using palladium that’s where; but I digress. Now that Jobs and HTML5 are daring to monopolize the iStuff world it will drive both players; (and maybe even drag the good ol’ folks in Redmond along) to a far better place.

Jobs will make a play with HTML5 adding new and exciting potentials to the rich space; Adobe will counter with its “Secret Vault” stuff. We will all enjoy more profound “Rich” experiences because of this clash of the Titans.

It’s all good after all.

Progress… Really?

The largest mobile device company in the world has just released an innovative product that is about to change how we all live. At least that is how Steve Jobs sees it. Today the iPad becomes available to the public in its Wi-Fi form, with the 3G version shipping shortly after.

I found the way Jobs introduced the iPad very interesting – the product between the iPhone and MacBook. The question is:  Do we really need another device that does not replace either our phones or laptops?

As a productivity device, the iPad is far less efficient than my laptop. It can’t compete with e-ink readers given the backlight display. I can read and respond to email on something much smaller with the same efficiency. So where is the real value?

Oddly enough, I actually think the people at Apple are on to something. The problem isn’t that we need a device that comes somewhere between our phones and laptops. The real issue is that personal computing needs to evolve and the iPad is something that will lead us in the right direction. Just as Google is moving more towards an open browser-based computing world, Apple is taking its stance with its mobile operating system and one-stop shop for all your needs (i.e.  iTunes, App Store, etc.).

While I may not necessarily subscribe to Apple’s direction, I do believe in progress and the iPad is certainly a great example given its previous attempts at evolving the personal computer platform like the Newton. So along with the rest of the world, I wait with great enthusiasm to see how the iPad will actually be received in the market and, more importantly, what will be born out of this latest iteration of computing.
