The challenge
As part of Xperia's ‘Reality Remade’ collaboration project, Xperia Studio invited the most talented people of the digital generation to create fun, beautiful, out-there experiences – distributed and shared through their established digital networks. They could pitch anything they liked - as long as Sony's Xperia smartphone was at the heart of the idea.
Our solution
Inspired to make the world's first 'real' alien invasion movie, BAFTA-nominated British director Tom Harper (This is England '86) used Sony Xperia arc S phones to create The Swarm. A teaser - showing strange lights over London - was tweeted and picked up by UFO bloggers. Mashable’s online premiere and the ‘making-of’ documentary The Invasion Will Not Be Televised were then seeded far and wide by everyone involved in the project.
The results
The films have passed YouTube 350,000 views with no bought media, attracting online and press coverage from the likes of The Telegraph and Mashable. The campaign was less about clocking up views, and more about demonstrating the possibilities of Xperia smartphones. But with 261,750 views for the documentary and 77,300 views for The Swarm itself, many more people have seen what the phones are really capable of.
