The assignment

HEMA, Holland’s primary retail chain, makes ordinary things special. This sense is ingrained in every Dutch consumer – each and every one of them drops by their local HEMA on a regular basis. HEMA has been a household name for years, and excels in quality products (ranging from clothing to wine and kitchens utensils) with a well thought-of and unique design.

In search of a new online shopping experience, HEMA turned to LBi Amsterdam. Optimization of their navigation and making products easy to find were at the top of HEMA’s wish list.

 

The solution

Our challenge: how to equal the ongoing success of HEMA stores with a website? The answer lay in the actual stores with their excellent shopping experience. HEMA shops feature a unique combination of high quality at the right price and an attractive but clean presentation.

In order to translate the sense of standing in the middle of the actual shop, we gave the products (literally) lots of room. The product shots are large enough to make the products almost tangible.

Looking around and being pleasantly surprised starts on the home page. A prominent tag cloud brings an associative mix of product categories, products and special offers. Each page features a smaller tag cloud – a first in online retail experiences. In addition, the tag clouds on HEMA.nl are unique because of the combination of words and images.

Off course, an online shop must be well-organized, easy to use and quick. In cooperation with HEMA we restructured all product categories, and made them accessible through a surveyable navigation. A price filter makes it easy to find products within your budget, and the full assortment is always within reach because of the sitemap on each page.

 

Since launch

  • Increase of overall basket value
  • Significant increase of visitors and pageviews
  • Bricks and clicks: 70% collect products in store, 30% choose home delivery
  • M/F ratio online the same as offline
  • Women visit to look at brochure, men to order products
  • 52% of visitors are over 38 years old
